The seventh son of George III, the Duke of Cambridge served in both the Hanoverian and British armies. He was Military Governor of Hanover after its re-capture from Napoleon in November 1813. Lawrence was the most fashionable and also the greatest portraitist of his generation. He was made Principal Painter to George III in 1792 after Reynolds.

Adolphus was educated by tutors until he was twelve years old when he was sent with his brothers Prince Ernest and Prince Augustus to the University of Göttingen in Germany, which had been founded by his great-grandfather King George II..
